The Days of Tashreeq – The Remembrance of Allah is for All Times

The Remembrance of Allāh (عز و جل) has been Commanded Before, During and After the Days of Tashreeq

Remembrance of Allah has been prescribed through many ways and forms during the days of Tashreeq:

1. Mentioning the name of Allāh whilst slaughtering. According to some of the scholars slaughtering can be done up until the end of Tashreeq. And this is an opinion attributed to Imam Shafi’ee and Imam Ahmed. However, the majority of the companions (رضي الله عنهم) are of the opinion that slaughtering is specifically for two days from the days of Tasheeq along with the day of Nahr (Eid). This is also well known from Ahmed, Mālik , Abu Hanifah and the majority of the scholars (رحمهم الله).

2. Remembering Allāh (عز و جل) when eating and drinking. Verily it is legislated that one should mention the name of Allāh before they eat and drink and praise Him at the end.

And in a the hadith of the Prophet (ﷺ):

{Verily Allāh loves from His slaves that when they have eaten something that they praise Him (for that blessing) and when he drinks something they praise Him (for that blessing)}. [Muslim hadeeth 2:734]

3. Remembering Allāh by saying takbeer ″Allāhu Akbar ″ when throwing the stones (Jamarāt) during the days of Tashreeq. This is specifically for those performing Hajj.

4. Remembering Allāh generally. It is recommended that one remembers Allāh much in the days of Tashreeq. ′Umar ibn Khattāb (رضي الله عنه) used to say the takbeer in Mina and the people would hear him and they would likewise say the takbeer. So in Mina there would be the sound of overwhelming takbeer.

Verily Allāh (عز و جل) says:

And of them there are some who say: “Our Lord! Give us in this world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and save us from the torment of the Fire! [Surat Al-Baqara : 201]

Many of the Salaf would prefer to say this supplication much throughout the days of Tashreeq (due to the verse mentioned above).

′Iqrima (رحمه الله) said ‘It is preferred that one says this supplication during the days of Tashreeq’.

In explaining the meanings of this verse:

Hasan al Basri (رحمه الله ) said  ‘Goodness in this life is knowledge and worship (of Allāh عز و جل) and goodness in the hereafter is paradise’.

‘Sufyan (رحمه الله) said ‘Goodness in this life is knowledge and pure provisions. Goodness in the hereafter is paradise’.

During the Days of Tashreeq supplications are from the most virtuous remembrance of Allāh:

Ziyad Al Jasasee stated from Abi Kinaanah Al Qureshi that he heard Abu Musa Al Ash’ari (رضي الله عنه) in his sermon on the day of Nahr (Eid ) say:

After the day of Nahr are three allotted days mentioned by Allāh. On these days supplications will be accepted so raise your needs to Allāh – ask Allāh!’

Gratitude and the Remembrance of Allah are Continuous:

The distinct meaning surrounding the command of remembering Allāh after the completion of the Hajj rites is that other types of worship are completed and left. As for the remembrance of Allāh it remains and it is not completed nor has it ended. It is continuous for the believers in this life and the hereafter.

Verily Allāh commands that he be remembered after the completion of the prayer.

He (عز و جل) said:

When you have finished As-Salat (the prayer – congregational), remember Allah standing, sitting down, and lying down on your sides, but when you are free from danger, perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as- Salat). Verily, the prayer is enjoined on the believers at fixed hours. [Surat An-Nisa : 103]

Allāh (عز و جل) said, ordering with His remembrance:

فَإِذَا قُضِيَتِ الصَّلَاةُ فَانْتَشِرُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ وَابْتَغُوا مِنْ فَضْلِ اللَّهِ وَاذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ كَثِيرًا لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ

Then when the (Jumu’ah) Salat (prayer) is finished, you may disperse through the land, and seek the Bounty of Allah (by working, etc.), and remember Allah much, that you may be successful.

[Surat Al-Jumu’ah : 10]

And Allāh (عز و جل) said

(وَإِلَىٰ رَبك فَارْغَبفَإِذَا فَرَغْتَ فَانْصَبْ)

So when you have finished (from your occupation), then stand up for Allah’s worship (i.e. stand up for prayer). And to your Lord (Alone) turn (all your intentions and hopes and) your invocations. [Surat Al Sharh: 7-8]

Hasan Al Basri (رحمه الله )said’ He commanded them when they finished battle that they should exhort effort in the remembrance of Allāh. All actions can be completed and left however, as for remembering Allāh عز و جل)) then this is never completed and left. All actions are cutoff with the ending of this life and nothing of it remains in the hereafter. As for the remembrance of Allah it is never cut-off. The believer lives upon (and is in need of) the remembrance of Allāh ,he dies upon the remembrance of Allāh and is resurrected upon the remembrance of Allāh’.

Dhu noon (رحمه الله )said: ‘This life has not been made pure except with the remembrance of Allāh. And nor the hereafter except with His pardoning and nor paradise except by seeing Him’.

So for the believers, the days of Tashreeq comprise of blessings for their bodies through eating and drinking and blessings for their hearts through the remembrance of Allāh and being grateful to Him and with this concludes the blessings. However, when gratitude for a blessing arises then the slave’s (showing) gratitude is in itself another blessing which in turn requires another form of gratitude so therefore gratitude, in reality, never ends.
